Critical

The Game written by Ken Dryden is a piece that at first seems to glorify the life of athletes but is really a piece to show how obsessed with image and reputation our world has become. Dryden, who was a goal tender for the Montreal Canadiens and has been a politician, has had his time in the spotlight, making him an excellent author to write such a truthful piece of literacy. His purpose is to address what reputation and image mean to the modern person now and how both concepts can be molded by weak minded, and the weak minded then become the majority. Drydenrsquo;s use of sports games in the beginning of the piece leads up to best describing our obsession with celebrity lifestyle as ldquo;an ad game, an image game, a celebrity gamerdquo;. As a celebrity/athlete himself, Dryden shares his view on both sides of being a celebrity and what he thinks celebrities really are. This method is successful and gets the point across.

Personal

I really liked ldquo; The Gamerdquo; by Ken Dryden. His thoughts on how everyday people view celebrities and what celebrities really are, are quite interesting. It is true, no one is more special then the other. We are all normal people. There is no magic wand that turns someone into a celebrity. The wand would be us, as human beings, obsessing over the latest trends, and through magazines, TV, and even through the ldquo;grapevinerdquo;, we have become weak. We have put humans on pedestals and worshiped them like gods. We have become more focused on how to be like celebrities, then to be ourselves. This has caused problems. Children now dress like Britney Spears at the tender age of 8, and what is worse is that the parents are dressing them. There are people out there starving themselves to fit a size 0, to make others happy, rarely themselves. There are more gang related fights because of how the media has popularized the ldquo;gangstardquo; image. We also cause problem for celebrities themselves. The pressure to be super thin, to act a certain way, and generally be a certain way can take its toll on the celebrities. These normal people struggle just the same as we do. They cry, laugh, be angry, love, get rejected, and all in front of the world. Some celebrities have lost their lifes due to our infatuation with them. An example would be Princess Diana. We were obsessed with her beauty, her kindness, and we wanted to know everything that was happening to her. In the end, it caused a car accident that would take her life. At what price does the obsession with reputation and image end?
